Changing W2000 PDC's

Hello.

I have a w2000 PDC on my network which i want to replace as it is now slow. I have a new W2000 server on the domain that i waish to promote as PDC. There are alot of users and mail accounts to move over. Is there a way of transfering the user information and mial accounts form old PDC to New and is there a white paper that explains the process.

Firstly, there is no such thing as a Win2000 PDC. PDC is a NT4 term, with Win2000 all domain controllers are considered equal.

All you need to do is get the new server online, make sure you install all the services the old one has (such as DHCP, DNS), promote it to a Domain Controller and it will copy all the Active Directory info (with the user accounts and email addresses) across to the new machine. Best to leave it for an hour or two to make sure its up to date though.

Then you will need to delegate your new domain controller as the RID, PDC and infrastructure master (Right mouse on the domainname in the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC and choose Operations Masters).

Finally, when you have tested it's running okay, perhaps by temporarily pulling the network cable on the old machine, demote the old domain controller using the DCPRomo.exe tool. That will tell the new domain controller that the old one is no longer a domain controller and to delete all its relevant active directory info. Then you can safely remove from it from the network.

He will need to move the Schema and Domain Naming Master to the new server.

To move the Schema:

Click Start, and then click Run.
Type regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll, and then click OK. A message should be displayed stating that the registration was successful

Click Start, click run, type mmc, and then click OK.
On the Console, menu click Add/Remove Snap-in.
Click Add.
Click Active Directory Schema.
Click Add.
Click Close to close the Add Standalone Snap-in dialog box.
Click OK to add the snap-in to the console.
Right-click the Active Directory Schema icon, and then click Change Domain Controller.NOTE: If you are not on the domain controller where you want to transfer the role ,you need to take this step. It is not necessary if you are connected to the domain controller whose role you want to transfer.


Click Specify Domain Controller, type the name of the domain controller that will be the new role holder, and then click OK.
Right-click Active Directory Schema, and then click Operation Masters.
In the Change Schema Master dialog box, click Change.
Click OK.
Click OK .
Click Cancel to close the dialog box.


For Domain Naming Master:

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Domains and Trusts.
Right-click the Active Directory Domains and Trusts icon, and then click Connect to Domain Controller.NOTE: If you are not on the domain controller where you want to transfer the role ,you need to take this step. It is not necessary if you are connected to the domain controller whose role you want to transfer.


click the domain controller that will be the new role holder, and then click OK.
Right-click Active Directory Domains and Trusts, and then click Operation Masters.
In the Change Operations Master dialog box, click Change.
Click OK to confirm that you want to transfer the role.
Click OK.
Click Cancel to close the dialog box
