Changing the System Board 1

I want to use a new system board for an existing installation of Windows 2000. My sparse understanding is that I will have to delete all references to hardware in the registry and then cold start Windows 2000, using F7 at some point to induce a system repair.

Could someone please confirm this and also give me a clue how to zap hardware references in the registry. Do I use Control Panel->System->Device Manager to achieve this?

I will Ghost the system volume before commencing operations.

I'm sure someone will correct me but I think you will have a much easier time of it if you just reinstall windows from fresh........

Yes, a fresh/clean install would be appropriate so Win2000 picks up the board resources properly. It will be more stable.

I can vouch for the WindowsReinstall.com Option 2: Simply swap motherboards and reboot; Win2K detects changes.

I installed a new mo-bo and AMD CPU in my Win2K kit at home last week, all other hardware including RAM unchanged.

In short Win2K handled it more or less automatically.

After four re-boots and inserting a driver disks on demand, including chipset drivers, all was well, and everything in the Device Mangler listed as error free.

The PC has now been running for a week continuously without error or re-start.

I agree with BigJohnD. Before I resorted to starting all over, I would at least TRY the presto chango. If it seems problematic, you can always go back to square one. But why do it if you don't have to?
Consider XP if you have to start over. Much better IMHO.

I had to reinstall Win2000 cos the old motherboard did not support power management.

Nonetheless, thanks guys for providing a lifeline which I may need in the future.
