Hello.

I have a database that was developed by another employee who is no longer with us. He coded it so it would check usernames upon loading the database and give permissions accordingly. The problem is that he was the administrator and we dont' know his password and can't get in to the design of the forms and modules. in other words, we can use the database in read-only mode. Is there a way to delete some file or to change something to get around this? I tried import all objects to a new database but the permissions were imported as well.

No-one here can help with this type of problem as it is never possible to verify that the questionner is authorised to access the database.

Your best course of action is to search the web for a password revealer program.

I was afraid of that. I figured that would be the answer. Well I'm at a dead end and I really need to get at the design of these forms. Any suggestions on where I can look on google to do this?

Thanks for any help

Hi Katoc,

Looks like an interesting problem. I guess that security is implemented in a workgroup file (.mdw?). What happens if you start up the app. while pressing the Shift key? Do you still not see the database window?

It may be in some workgroup file but even when I copied the objects to a new database and then moved that database to another computer, the security was still implemented.

When I start the database, I see the database window with all its objects. I can open a form, report, queries, etc... but I cannot access the 'design' of the forms, reports and modules. I need to change the functionality of the forms and reports. For that I need access to the design mode. When I try to open a form in design mode, it tells me 'You do not have exclusive access to the database at this time' and immediately after it says 'You don't have permission to read 'form1'. to read this object, you must have read design permission for it.'

Hi Katoc,

Sorry I did not respond earlier, my internet connection has been down this weekend and yesterday.
This is strange indeed, apparently you have rights to copy the object, but not to access them in design mode. If you see the database window, are you able to access the security Tab? If you can, you should select Tools --> security --> user and group permissions. For each object you can check which reader has read design and which has not. The question is: is there an active user (with known password) who has read design? If not, you can try to grant yourself that rights or any other user with known password. If you don't know a user's password you can reset it (From the window you see after selecting Tools --> security --> user and group accounts) and login with that user's account name and a blank password. Hope any of this helps.

Thanks for all the help. We found a copy of the same database with no security installed so I have a working copy now. So no need to break in the other one.
