1.outgoing delivery
we are moving from one ISP to another. on old ISP we deliver messages using DNS. with new ISP we are pointing our Exchange delivery at their email virus scanning towers (star cleanmail/message labs). I just want to check that I am going to change this in the correct place within Exchange Administrator. Connections- Internet mail service-connections tab- message delivery - change from use DNS to forward all messages to host with that box filled out with virus scanning server address given to us by new ISP- smtp.star.co.uk.

2.incoming
Our incoming mail is currently coming in from smtp.ourUSAdomain.com. Currently our only MX record is for smtp.ourUSAdomain.com. Our DNS servers in the good ol USofA are updating the MX records to come straight to us rather than through smtp.ourUSAdomain.com. This will update our highest priority MX record to point at our new IP from Star with the smtp.ourUSAdomain.com record as backup. As far as the Exchange box itself is concerned what are the changes (if any?) required? I guess the question put another way is how does Exchange know how to receive incoming messages?

many thanks all

If your firewall is setup to push smtp/pop3 to a certain addy on the inside.. that's all you need.. smtp/pop3 are just service on the exchange server waiting for any mail that is thrown at it.. You might wanna check for any kinds of rules or anything on your firewall before throwing the switch.. it's probably fine, but I got screwed once because I didn't check it.. 8( Make sure if you use the "Forward all Mail to" deal that that addres is reachable from the inside before you throw the swith..

Alot of ISP's just hold the MX record for business, but what you said about yours sounds pretty good!

Good luck!

P.S. - Outside Virus scanning and SPAM filting ROCKS!!!
