I just got a brand new computer with WSK3 Small Business Server and as I boot it up I configured it, by mistake, as a domain controller. I need to change it to become part of a workgroup instead, but when I got to the 'Member of' area in the 'Computer Name Change' everything is gray out, in spite that I logged in as administrator.

Is there a way to change from DC to Workgroup without having to reinstall?

Unless I am very much mistaken, Windows Server 2003 Small Business Server is only capable of running as a Domain controller, the idea behind SMS is for a single machine to act as domain controller, email server, etc... all by itself. SMS does not play well with other servers. I could tell you a funny story about how I almost lost my job, but I digress.

SBS can not run in workgroup mode. It requires AD as does Exchange 2003.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark
