Hello,

I need help changing the default user name that Win XP uses to connect to a network drive/folder. You know after you go and click on "Map A Network Drive..." It says "Connect using a different user name" on the screen. Once you click on this it tells you the default name it will use to map the drive/folder, and if you would like to change from the default just type in the new userid/password. My problem is when I type in the new userid/password, which I created on the server computer it doesn't let me connect. Because it says that the computer is already connected using the default user name. The only way I found a solution was to create another account on XP and then use this account to access the networked drive. Because when I do this and then check the default user name, it is set to the correct name I used on the server computer. But I would like to just have one user account per computer. I tried looking at the regedit to see if I could find how to change it but no luck. So if anyone knows of a way to change this I will really appreciate your help.

Thank you,

I'm pretty sure if you unmap the drive and remap it you'll be able to change the logon user and password. It'll also have a check box that asks you if you want to reconnect on logon.

Getting the a related problem to this. I change the user name - and select reconnect on logon. The user then can access the shared folders without a problem. But then they switch off and next time they switch on, they can no longer access the folders as they are not authorised. I have to go through the "disconnect drive" "map network drive" routine all over again. I have tried to use a batch file that uses the "net share" command to set them up as they boot (by putting the batch file in the statup folder), but the first line comes up as "connected as a different name", and this is with NO shares setup (as seen in windows explorer). Please advise where I should be looking.

In general:

If you synchronize the username and passwords between all workstations you will never see the prompt:

In specific:

Start, Run, control userpasswords2
Choose the Advanced tab
Edit any stored username and password entries.
