We have a total of 200 T-22 IBM Thinkpad Laptops that are to be imaged from one. The Image will have The same computer name and user. This was joined to the Domain via Dial up. My question is When I get those laptop images from the vendor, and I rename the user to the person recieving the Laptop, And I change the computer name and authenticate onto the domain, I should get a new SID. Will that person still retain the SID from the image or will that person get a new SID. If this person retains this imaged SID and does not get another one when Joined. How do I keep the setup of that user(Desktop Settings) and get another SID. If I just rename the person what problems am I going to get?

Do your users already exist? If so, then they already have a SID from the domain. Otherwise, once you create their accounts, they will have only one SID for the domain.

One great thing about Win2k is that for laptops, the user can always logon to the domain. But the OS won't complain if the user is not actually connected to the domain at the time of logon. So all your users should be setup on the Win2k laptops as "user.domain", where "domain is your domain." No more messing with hardware profiles and other layers for dial-up users.

Yes, the users were already part of the domain. They are geting new laptops. Our administrator was worried about problems down the road, and he wasnt sure. OK, So even if I take the image and I just rename the imaged user name to the user that was already joined the domain from his previous laptop, then I should not have any problems? After renaming the imaged computer name and authenticating to the domain, there should not be any problem?
When the domain controller sees the user on a new computer name, does it give it the SID that it was assigned to on its old computer? Do you know anywhere that I can get more indept info on SID's. Thank you for your response. This verifies that the administrator has nothing to worry about.

Mcsereed,

Basically, the only thing the domain cares about it that it has a Unique ID, and a valid user account. Each laptop (though the same) has it's own MAC address on the NIC, and whatever domain user logs on to it after the PC has been renamed will authenticate without problems.

Do not try to join the domain without changing the computername 1st (locally) however..this may wreak havoc on the DC to process unneccessary requests for a ton of computers with the same name!
;)

There's nothing to worry about as long as the computers are joined properly to the domain as uniquely-named clients.

Good luck

Thank you sir. I wanted to be clear on this that the administrator would not have any problems. Thank you for your help.

Right! Everything you said is correct. You don't really have to concern yourself with the SIDs as long as you log on with a domain account. SIDs are internal to the domain controllers. But definitely take Pbxman's advice concerning the laptops. Change their computer names before you plug them into the network. Good luck.
