This is a newbie question, I apologize- I'm coming from a background of PSP, but I'm working with effects that were created in PS6 so I need to duplicate these effects exactly.

Here's some ascii art for what I'm trying to do:

basically it's supposed to be a cut-off rounded rectangle with some empty space, and then another rectangle.

If I were to do this in PSP, I would
1) create a rounded-rectangle
2) apply my style(s)/texture(s)
3) select the area in the middle using the selection/rectangle tool to be deleted
4) bevel the two left over parts.

(I hope that made sense.)

The problem is, this is only possible because I treat it as a raster image in PSP which I can't seem to do in Photoshop. So what might the Photoshop solution be?

Here's what I've done so far- I created a rounded rectangle... but then I could not select anything with the selection tool. so I tried editing the points using the direct selection arrow and deleting the bottom half, but it would be difficult to line the edges up so they are equal (and there must be a better way). Then I'd have to create another rectangle of the same width and apply the same style to both (and have it look like they are one layer).

If my question is hard to understand, I would be glad to post sample images of a step-by-step process.

Thanks to anybody who can help..

I think I know what you mean.

Here's a trick I find usefull, It may help....

Make your shape without removing the strip in the middle. Then apply your effects. Next, Create a new layer and link it to the layer with the effects on it (ONLY THESE 2 LAYERS). Then go to Layers>Merge Linked.

This gets rid of the effects and basicly gives the same effect as rasterising a text layer. Now take your strip out and bevel whats left.

I hope that wasn't too confusing.
