I have a 2000 domain that I need to change the name of. I'm aware that this can't be done with 2000, but it can with 2003. Therefore, would the following process work ?

1. I upgrade my sole 2000 DC to 2003.
2. On the now-2003 DC, I rename the domain.
3. I move my 2000 member servers into the new domain.
4. I promote one of my 2000 member servers to be a DC.
5. I remove the 2003 DC, leaving a 2000 network on the new domain name.

Are there any fundamental issues with any of the above, and/or any particular issues I need to be aware of/worry about ?

TIA.

It looks like it may work, but one thing to not forget. When you remove the 2003 server, you will need to seize the FSMO roles for the domain.

Good luck!

Why not move the roles before removing the 2003 server? I think that would be cleaner than having to go through the whole process of forcibly seizing the roles.

Thanks for the help guys. It's greatly appreciated.

One more question, now I've had chance to think through the whole process again.

What happens if the server holding the FMSO options for the domain dies and cannot be recovered ? How do I get that role back to another DC in its' place ?

Is that where I would need to sieze the FMSO role ?

Rob

I don't know why I didn't think of that before, guess I'm used to having the server die and not be able to do it gracefully. Thanks for the reminder Duke!

Rob, yes, that is when you would need to seize them...

Thanks,

Why remove the 2003 DC? I would do everything up to Step 4 and then split up the FSMO roles between the 2003 DC and the 2000 DC.

Help! I've fallen and I can't reach my beer.
