Good day,

My laptop is HP pavilion dv6748us Entertainment notebook PC and using Vista as my Operating system. I would like to change my operating system from vista to XP. some of my friends keep on telling me that some drivers might not work properly and I cant wait to ask your professional advice in this problem.

If changing vista to XP would be possible, what are the guidelines I could use to check if my drivers are working properly?

last night, I have listed all the labels of my drivers as I am worried that the technician might do some fishy things.

kindly help me out on this.

See if these thread gives you a clue or two, some general, and some on driver searching, then see if you can find suitable drivers via the many links before you swap systems.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have read those links that you given.

The technician is experiencing problems in formatting my laptop. He have installed all the drivers but once you have open it, it always directs to CHKDSK (check disk) and when you finish checking the disk, it corrupts the windows.

isnt it the boot sector / hard disk is the problem?

Is chkdsk being run on Vista, or XP? Have you now removed Vista, and are you now in XP?

In either case what is chkdsk telling you by way of extra information?

The drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software to thoroughly check the condition of the hard drive.

It is run using XP. He just inserted the XP operating system and he said that the XP will remove the vista by itself..is it true? Or is it advisable to completely remove the Vista before running the new OS?

No other information other than checking the disk drives. As far as I know, the drive would be damage if it says "bad sector..etc." any information that I should look into?

He says that he will just format the drive using a disk manager which has a slow formatting and let me know when it is done.

I am not really familiar with formatting PC's and I just don't want to face him without even knowing anything so I hope you could give me information about this issue

thanks in advance

Time for him to take up some refresher courses...

General guide line to DOWNGRADING from VISTA to XP:

DELETE partitions and then RECREATE them and have XP format them, or Nuke the drive, using DBAN or similar program, before you install XP (sometimes you will get away with it, other times it will just bonk the way you described)...

XP will always fail when CHKDSK is run on a VISTA partition, this has to do with the differences in the FileSystem, e.g. XP is version 3.1 and Vista version 5.x (exact version eludes me at present)...

Hi linney,

Thanks for the info. That is a big help. My laptop has been formatted using a disk manager by low formatting.

We have installed the XP without uninstalling vista because we thought that it would remove vista program

anyway, what a great experience. Thank you very much

Bigben, thanks for the info. I have read it and I knew it. It's just, sometimes it would be a great help to ask it directly so I could save time like 1 - 100 workforce. Thanks anyway.

Ei fellows,

My laptop were already in XP. I just bought a headset with a built in microphone in it. However, I have tested playing some music files, but then when I put up the headset I can hear the sound in it and with the laptop speakers..both of them are functioning. Isnt it that when you plug in the headset, the laptop speaker will have no sound at all and that "should" be the case.

I have tested the microphone but it is not functioning. However, I have tested it in other laptop but it is functioning that it simply implies that the laptop has the problem.

Is there any drivers that I have forgotten to install with regard to this problem.

need help buddies..thank you very much in advance

See if you have a similar setting to this?

"Dell helpped me resolve the problem. It was a setting issue.

I had to go to: control panel>audio console>headphone detection. Under the
"headphone detection" tab there are two options folowing "when headphone jack
is connected". Those options are: "Automatically enable headphone settings"
and "Automatically mute speakers". Once selected, the problem was resolved".

speakers don't mute when headphones are inserted

See if your Microphone is being muted too in the same area of Audio Properties.

Some machines are deliberately setup like this.

Speaker+Headphone at the same time

You should start your own thread and try the XP Forum, this is the Vista Forum.

linney & fellows,

I cant find these options: "Automatically enable headphone settings" and "Automatically mute speakers" in my laptop. I am using HP Pavillion dv6748us notebook originally vista OS downgraded to XP. Conexant audio device

Is this has something to do with the OS? even its integrated mic are not functioning.

I found out that to use headset alone without having any sounds from its built-in speakers is to turn the mute ON "first" then plug in the headset jacks BUT then when you turn the mute "OFF" you may hear the sounds in speakers and in headsets.

I think I am lacking of "right" drivers. I have read some informations from HP website and it says that this might be the problem when you down grade to XP as they do not support this problem unless you get back to VISTA OS BUT I firmly believe that there is always a positive answer to a certain question.

Ive got this from HP(When the operating system is downgraded from Vista to XP, the universal audio architecture (UAA) sound drivers must be installed. After installing UAA sound drivers, an updated driver for the component must be installed. HP nor Windows Update support UAA drivers.
NOTE: HP does not support the downgrading of HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario computers from Windows Vista to Windows XP. See the HP Notebook PCs - Issues with Downgrading HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario PCs to Windows XP and Restoring Windows Vista support document for more detailed information.

what is UAA? Do I need this? I have no yellow question marks in my device manager thats why when I had it downgraded to XP, no doubt that I missed some drivers BUT then now, I was thinking that I might lack some complementary softwares for this drivers.

please help me out of this

I hope I am making sense. Thanks

What make of Sound Card is it and what version of drivers have you installed?

linney,

Driver provider: Conexant
Driver version: 3.30.0.0

conexant universal device x8 version 4.0.28.1

Hi linney,

Thanks for the link. However, I have uninstalled the previous conexant audio driver and replaced it with conexant smart audio 221 which I downloaded.

In the website, I also found a UAA installer but an error occur and its says that I dont have to install this UAA. Then I install this conexant smart audio 221 and it works. It finally solved the problem.

I am curious, As I have read this information about UAA, it was all about enhancement provided for audio, isnt it? and It has to be installed before conexant?

Do I still need this UAA? is it a pre requisite of some of my drivers?

thanks

Do I still need this UAA?
NO, it is already installed, with or through SP3 and some AUDIO driver packages...
is it a pre requisite of some of my drivers?
Yes, but as mentioned, it is part of SP3 and most recent Audio driver packages...

PS: Glad you got it to work...

Ben
