I want to set a bunch of computer's running XP Pro to auto-detect speed and duplex. We can't realistically visit each PC to do this.

What we need is a mechanism by which pc's can be changed from 10Mb/half duplex to Auto/Auto.

Maybe a reg file?

We'll also need a mechanism to change machines back to 10Mb/half duplex in case it all goes horribly wrong.

It would also be nice if there was a way in which the end user can easily tell which speed their PC is operating at.

Can anyone help please?

Can't help you on the remote speed thing. But to set it up so people can see what the setting is, you just need to tick "Show Icon in Notification Area when connected".

They can then hover over the icon and it will display the speed (but not duplex)

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

Well if you are looking to do this in the registry you would need to make sure they are all the same setup.

Becuase it uses unique names and numbers to the device name (I believe). If you want to know where it is I would just search the name of the nic device verbatum what it is in the device manager.
