In the past versions of Windows, it was comparatively easy to change file extensions. This was great as I could make, for example, copious *.txt files, for various functions and keep them that way until I wanted to do whatever, change the extension to *.ini and away I went.

I have now come across three instances where the above type of bludgeoning of the file would have saved me hours of work, however, it appears in XP this can't be done.

Anyone know how?

Very often just using "Rename" in Windows XP seems to work in changing file extension as well as filename. I suppose if the file in question is a "read only" or if you don't have permission to access it the renaming wont work. Make sure of this - Open any folder, Click Tools>Folder Options>View Tab

Under Advanced Settings, remove the checkmark from in front of "Hide
extensions for known file types"

Some other links for you.
