I am trying to set up a new computer from my home and would like to logon under my work domain user account. I have a VPN but dont have it activated before the windows logon so it won't let me logon with the Domain account.

Is there any way around this?

File resources require a FQDN login if you try to access it without VPN, as does Exchange access. If you can't connect to VPN prior to login you can't login using the domain account as you need the login servers to do it, so you may be stuck with the "supply credentials as needed" route.

What VPN client/version are you using?

Just the standard set connection in windows XP Pro into a Windows 2003 server which is filtering for the VPN

I have a new Laptop I am trying to set up and don't want to do all of my installs under the local user account. I prefer to do it under the my ultimate domain\user account name. But I can't get to the office to log on directly. I can once I logon to the local PC connect to the VPN but that drops once I logoff and log back on.

Could I VPN connect through another pc at home and route through that possibly?

Really appreciate the help

It's a laptop, right? Bring it into the office, connect it to the LAN, join it to the domain, reboot and log in. This will create the local account based on your domain account. Then when you take it home, you can still log in with your domain credentials to do the installs.

Just make sure the local account has admin rights of course...

I know that will work but I can't get to the office until tomorrow and was hoping there was a way I could get this to work this afternoon so I can continue installing other programs.

Now if there was a dial-up VPN option setup under Network Connections, you could use the dial-up option on the login screen which establishes a connection before processing your login. As far as I know, that's just not possible over ethernet without 3rd-party software. So you might be stuck unless you really have dial-up as an option.
