Hi everyone,
My company is currently using Windows Server and Exchange 2003. Currently, the domain is setup as company.local. Our internet domain name used to be company.com now we need to change it to .net. What is the best way for me to change? From what I know, all I needed to do was change the SMTP to be defaulted to company.net and create DNS entry for company.net. What else do I have to do? Thanks a lot.

IT,
Ben

It is best to leave you internal domain name company.local for security reasons and to follow MS recommendations on setting up a domain.

When you internal domain matches the external Internet domain name, you will run into problems resolving external public records for your web sites.

MS has introduced the automatic domain name creation of domainname.local to prevent unknowing administrators from accidentally setting up the internal domain name that matches the Internet domain name.

I would not rename the internal domain name...there is no reason to do this.

1) On the internet, register company.net. This is probably already done.

2) Ask your ISP to create an MX record for company.net that points to your Public IP address. (Note: this public IP address will most likely be your routers IP or one of your available public IP's. Just make sure that you pick the Public IP address that NATs to your Exchage Server's internal IP....as mail will be flowing to this server)

3) In Exchange add the SMTP address for each user (or globally) of company.net.

Hi Jpoandl,
I just found out that my company originally created the domain as .com already, not .local. How can I change from .com to .net if the domain was already setup as .net. I want to be able to receive my .com email as well as .net for awhile until we disconnect the .com.

I have encountered this problem and finally solved it. It's not an easy solution (ARGH).

You can handle this in one of two ways. Either reinstall AD with a domain namespace of company.com instead of company.local, or change your default recipient policy to reflect only your company.com domain where you want e-mail sent.

I have created detailed documentation on this subject, but I don't think I can attach it here

I don't get it... receiving e-mail has nothing to do with your internal domain name?????

You can have an internal domain name of company-int.local and receive mail directed to company.com and directed to company.net.

When you internal domain matches the external Internet domain name, you will run into problems resolving external public records for your web sites. In addition this is a security issue because the entire internet will know your internal domain name.

My internal domain is currently setup as .com. I added company .net to the default recipient policy and set @company.net as primary while @company.com as secondary. This is because I need to receive email coming in to company.com for about another month before I disable the .com. When I send out email, yahoo or others can see my email as .net but they cannot send to back to my .net email. They could send to my .com and when I reply, it will come back to them as .net. Can I not have both the company.com and company.net for sending and receiving?
