Change Default Instance to Named Instance

Is it possible to easily change a default instance ("(LOCAL)") of SQL Server 2000 to a Named Instance ("WASHINGTON", for example)??

Is there really much of a difference between the default and named instances? if so, what?

I beleive you have two choices. One is to create your new Washington instance and move all the needed object from you default over to your named instance. Issue here is that you have 2 instances ... the original default and the new WA.

The other way may be to drop the default instance by running the uninstaller and then running the installer w/ the new Washington name as the default instance name. May need to save your DBs and other object before hand so that you can reattach/reimport then back.

I believe that I already tried the first option, but was given an error message stating that there was already an instance of SQL Server with the WASHINGTON name.

I think I may just try option #2, I seem to recall though that I've had problems installing SQL Server 2000 with a named instance rather than a local instance. For example, during the installation process, if I named theb instance WASHINGTON, what will show up in Enterprise Manager is WASHINGTON/WASHINGTON. In other words, the <server name>/<SQL Server instance name>. how do I get around this problem?

That is what happens w/ the Default instance. It will take the name of the server. I am not sure how you get around naming the default server something other that the physical server name. I believe that is why we have Named Instances.
