Hi there.

We have recently installed CF5 and our site uses CFTree and CFGrid.

On some clients, loading these applets causes the browser to crash.
We are using IE5 or IE5.5.

Do we need an updated Virtual Machine?
Has anyone else experienced these difficulties?

Thanks
Jackie

Yes, I have.

You need to install the Java 2 Runtime Environment v1.3.1
You can download it from The file is called j2re-1_3_1-win.exe

Also there is an upgrade for the applets that come with CF5. It fixes some problems with the grid and seems to stop all that writing that shows while the tree is loading.

You can read about this at:
and that article gives you a link for a download of a new
cfjava2.jar file.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for getting back to me. I already got the hotfix. However, regarding the Java 2 Runtime stuff: All over the Allaire forums, they say one MUST use the 1.0.0_01 version and indeed, that is the version that is downloaded on the client using IE. One can't seem to load any other version on the client since I think I read that it is hard-coded to run that version. I tried running with the version you mention on the server, but the clients still had the down-level version of the plug-in, so I am REALLY confused as to what is supposed to be installed both at the server and at the client.

OK, now I'm out of my depth. I have also found this whole thing very confusing. I installed that run-time environment on the client, as it was the jvm/plug-in (??) on the client was what was causing the problem.

I only ever had that browser crashing problem on clients that had previously been using applets that came from CF4.5. This seemed to be because the automatic download didn't happen because it appeared that the JVM was already installed even though it was the old version. On some clients, I had to UNinstall the old java plugin first. (I'm certainly no expert on this.) Clients that had the automatic download take place seem to have been alright.

Which version of the browser are you using? - We use IE 5 or IE5.5. I'm not sure if this makes a difference.

I also asked this question on and somebody pointed me to this forum:

I don't know if you've seen this yet.

I am using either ie 5 or 5.5 as well. Regarding the forum you referred me to, I had seen that before and that is why I am confused: to quote what I saw in there -"BTW, the current version of the jre 1.3.1 will NOT work, it requires exactly 1.3.0_01", yet you mentioned above that you use j2re-1_3_1 which the statement in the forum says will not work! See why I am confused? Futhermore, I have various flavors of the problems on my clients from day to day. Last night, I had supposedly a javascript error ("errors on page"), yet today the same page runs okay! Nobody did a thing to change anything! I have one guy who has a hanging browser this morning after updating the grid. The person who had the supposed javascript error yesterday had no error today, yet after updating the grid a few times, she had the browser crash occur. I am at a loss as to what to try now.

I'm sorry - I really don't know the answer. If you have a client machine which you can experiment with, it might be worth giving the j2re-1_3_1-win.exe (from the sun site) a try. Uninstall other plug-ins etc. first and then download and run it. You never know!

Yup, that is what I am currently doing. I have three clients I am trying it on. IF it works, then I am only left with trying to explain to each client how they have to manually install the software. Not good, but at least it is only an internal project thank goodness. I sure wish Allaire would fix ALL of these cfgrid problems. I would like to use cfgrid again for other projects, but there is no way my team leader will let me do so.

Thanks for your help.
