I have no network but certain folders in windows xp recently have automatically changed to read-only and i cannot switch them back, delete, access or move them to another location. I have admin. rights but cannot work out what is happening.

Thanx in advance

Greg i used the support site you sent me but to no avail. I followed it correctly and tried doing it to multiple folders with this problem but it helped none of them. I still cannot move any files within one folder and another i cannot even access.
Please ask me for any additional information you may need from me.

Thank you again

Right so you are trying to access a folder and/or move files from it but you are not able to?

If this is correct, what error message are you getting?

Are you logged in as a user with administrative rights? If not it could be a permissions issue.

Finally what folder are you trying to copy files from?

all the folders i am having trouble with are in the same root folder.
THe first sub folder i am simply trying to delete and the error msg i get is simply "access denied. make sure disk is not..... or file is in use". I have checked and there are no programs running that should not be.
The second folder was created only today as i was downloading software using bittornado (bittorrent). It was fine for about 12 hours and then a msg came up saying cannot get access to the folder. I checked the properties of the folder and it had changed to read-only. I unchecked it applied it but it wouldn't work.
I am logged in as the admin.
I was only trying to copy the files to check if they could be moved but they wouldn't

Three possibilities.

1)
Is bit torrent open when you are trying to copy move the file(s)? If so it may be that people are currently downloading the files from your shared folder. In this instance you will not be able to move/delete them. Close down BitTorrent and you should be ok.

2)
Does the folder contain an AVI file that you have downloaded using bit torrent? If so your problem may be down to a corrupt index in the AVI file and the way XP reads these files. In this case you should follow the advice below:

822430 - Windows Stops Responding When You Click a Large AVI File in Windows Explorer

There is a bug in XP in handling AVI files, where the file is corrupt or broken, causing explorer to read the whole file looking for index

or property details.

It has been suggested to correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32

This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files.

3)
If there are no avi files then you should check for Malware and Virii by following the advice in "What are Good Virus/Spyware?Update/Firewall Practices?" faq779-5240

I close bittorrent before i try to move the files

I am not downloading any avi files they are ISO's

So i will follow the faq's advice and try all possibilities.

Thank you again for your help
