Hello All,

I have a definity g3r 8.3 system center stage. I need to use 7 more port networks to expand but i only have 6 slots left for the SI cards. Does anybody know where I can find information on how to expand the slots so I can add more SI cards? Is there a card that you put in the carriers and connect with fiber to expand its capability. Any assistance would be appreciated.

If you have six slots available, thats your current SNI limit.

You may be at a point where you need to add another Switch Node Carrier.

Im sorry for not clarifying. Yes I do need to add an additional switch node carrier. Im trying to find out what is all needed to do that. Do I need to stay within the PPN to do the expansion or can I expand on one of the EPN's? What card do I need to do that? Thanks for the response.

I am going to assume when you say "SI" cards you mean Switch Node Interface cards. These cards have fiber running from them over to the expansion interface cards. These cards provide the necessary communication links between the port networks and the PPN.

In a complete duplicated system each port network will use two SNI cards and two expansion interface cards. (Meaning that if one carrier in a port network goes down, you will not lose the entire port network).

In the past Avaya has recommend that our company install a second center stage in order to expand our port networks. I am assuming it will be the same in your case.

Idealy, you want your Switch Node Carriers to be in the PPN.
Therefore, if an EPN goes down you're not going to loose any more service than what is resident to that EPN.

If you loose your PPN it won't matter. You're dead in the water anyway.

If you have space in the PPN that's where you want your switch node carrier, but you can have it in an EPN.

You need a specific carrier type, as switch node carriers are not the same animal as your port-network carriers.

It's not a task I would suggest doing without contacting a vendor.

I agree with Deftyone. Adding a second SNI carrier gets really ugly. The two SNI carriers need to be linked with multiple fiber. The amount and configuration depends on how many total port networks you will have. Some existing port networks will need to be moved to the new SNI carrier. I you are not a highly competent G3R technician I would not try this on my own. You should probably get in in touch with a good vender.

As for adding the next Switch Node carrier into the PPN. First if you are duplicated the D position is already taken. So it would be better/easier to go ahead and add the SNC to say cabinet 2. There are several things you will need to do. One is the link (tie fiber) between the new SNC and the existing. Which means you will be moving fiber for cabinets. Make sure the Port Networks that reside in the cabinet of the new SNC in assigned in the same SNC. Other than that it's a piece of cake.
