CE 10 upgrade: install on my current 9 version or new machine?

I am familiarizing myself with documentation in preparation for an upgrade from CE 9 to CE10. Does anyone have any experiences and/or "gotchas" they would like to share from their upgrade experiences? I am also wondering if I can put my upgrade directly on top of my current 9 version or if it is really better to put it on a different machine and then migrate to it.
Thanks!

Hi,
I am a firm believer in 'clean' installs...

While in-place upgrades can work out, it introduces more potential failure points and it can be more trouble than
just creating a new system and importing what you need from the existing one ( assuming you have the hardware to do it this way)- It is also a good chance to 'clean up' the CE stuff and remove things you no longer need...

Huh? A new machine for a new version of an installed product? Something doesn't look right with this picture.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi,
In general I would agree that a upgrade to a newer version
should be fine as an in-place task, and for incremental upgrades ( 9.0 to 9.2 or Service Pack 1 to Service Pack 2) it would probably be the way to go.
But for a major version upgrade ( 8.x to 9.x or 9.x to 10.x) I believe that a new install ( when possible) will provide fewer unexpected consequences while maintaining access for your users until cut-over time.

Finally CE supports none system drive installs (i.e. drives other that C:).

So I would create a new drive partition and install 10 there.

Hi,
Actually, I have CE10 installed on my H: drive with most of its common files there as well: - It does put some files on the system drive either because they are Windows system dlls that need to be in the proper directory, or they need to be in the Common Files directory used by many Windows apps.

I participated in an upgrade to Ver 10 on top of the Ver 9. It was a smooth one.

Please keep in mind CE 10 does not support clients with Windows 98.

new2ce,

How did your implementation of CE10 over CE9 go? I'm planning on upgrading this quarter so I'm just curious. I plan on a clean install on new machines though and then I'll migrate over. I'm not brave enough to upgrade over the existing machines.
