I have had a 16x10x40 HP CDrw for a while now, has worked flawlessly for quite some time, now windows 2000 is corupting E:\WinNT\System32\Config\SYSTEM file from time to time upon reboot, and I have to use the recovery console to fix it, seems after a while Win2k is getting the habit of being unstable like Win98, and I planed to back up and re-install Windows 2000 , the long proven method of fixing a microsoft problem. However it seems now that my CD burner runs into problems, using Fireburner I try to create ISO, which I finally do sucessfully (the fireburner software to make ISO , if you feed it too many files it locks up trying to count up the size) , but when I attempt to burn it, even at test mode, it complains something about Media Error, sometimes buffer underun, even at a lower speed setting, I do have DMA turned on, this I am sure of. Even using the HP CDWriter Software it complains about buffer underrun, when using Adaptec DirectCD , all seems to go well except randomly it'll have a message somewhat like "There was an error when trying to read from the device, we sugest removing any critical data from the disk before continuing" although this doesnt seem to affect the burn, I fear it may have caused some files to become corupt upon burn, something I have not yet verified.
I would like to reinstall the OS, but at this present time, I Cannot back up my data to do so. My machine does not have a connection to the internet , so I do not have an updated virus database (however the machine I am now, now in the house I keep updated, [need to find out how to updave NAV without direct internet access]) I also have a partition with Win98, but 98 for odd reasons fails to work stabily in critical situations, but however will boot 100% of the times where as Win2k might not always. I do have theories to fix the problem, but figured I would post my thoughts.
Originally I had a DVDrom on the IDE onboard, and the CDrw going through the Promise ATA/100 controler card, now it is the reverse to ensure that DMA is being enabled on the CDrw drive. This has not fixed the problem, the other issue that I have not yet tested, is an issue of power consumption, I have a Sparkel 300W PSU housed in a Cardcooler MaxCool Server Tower case, running 3 HDD, a CDrw, DVDrom, and an original LiveDrive I , which I have hooked to my newer SB Audigy Drive (I use it's SPDIF output on the LiveDrive to hook to my Dolby Receiver for PowerDVD, I Cannot figure out where to plug in the SPDIF expansion on the card itself to do this without the livedrive, and still have 5.1 Analog hooked to the back of the Audigy for my computer audio, as using digital output to the orange port would only send a 2 channel digital output to the receiver instead of a true 5.1 surround like the analog port can do)
my next approach is to test the power by removing the DVDrom and placing it in a firewire enclosure. and if nessary the LiveDrive. I havent had this problem until now, and not until I installed the livedrive along side all the other drives but that too was a little while ago.
Then to clean the laser if needed, and final resort is to assume the CDrw is defective.
I have used the same 16X compatible PNY CDrw media that I always have, on the same spindle, and havent had a problem with them until now, even does the same on other media I have obtained. Karl Blessing aka kb244{fastHACK}
