Hi,
I've been having a problem with my cdrom drive. Whenever I stick in a cd of any type, it says that the device is not ready and gives me a message where I can select "Retry" or "cancel" and if I hit "retry" it keeps giving me the same message. The drive is installed correctly and has been working, but this problem just popped up. It shows up in "my computer" and in control panel->system->devices....so I am really unclear as to why it isn't working. Any help is appreciated.

It's not unusual for a CD-ROM to work perfectly all the way up to the point where it goes south.
Having said that, it sounds like you have already gone through the appropriate troubleshooting steps. The next step is to connect a known-good CD-ROM (either buy one or borrow a friend's) and hook it up. If it works, you know it was the CD-ROM, if it doesn't, try swapping in a new IDE cable, or switching controllers.

Before you give up completly on your drive and not knowing what system you have but try going to find "on the start menu" type in cdrom and try everything it suggests, the most you can lose is it not working which dosen't sound to me like a big loss......HAVE FUN.......PS it realy dosen't suggest anything it just list some things that when you open them they install, I would try cdrom.inf first

do yourselve a favour make a win98 bootdisk and the boot with cdrom support and see if it works in dos and then try to resove proble
