I'm trying to install win98 onto a blank hard drive. When I try to access the cdrom to run setup after booting from a win98 bootdisk, I get an abort, retry, fail error. The cdrom doesn't even sound like it's running. I know the cdrom isn't broken, because it worked before I re-partitioned my hard drive. It would be appreciated if anyone could give me advice on how to get my cdrom to start communicating.. Thanks!

Did you attempt to clean the CD itself. Dirty CDs can cause problems. Also if you can clean the CD Drive. Does the boot disk assighn the CDROM an drive letter? Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

Here is exactly what I did. Initially my cdrom worked, and I booted from my 98 bootdisk with cdrom support. I then went into e: which is the cdrom and copied the cabinet files from win98 directory of the cd to c:\cabs. I then ran the the setup from my hardrive. Once I got windows up, I started installing word 97. It gave me a missing .dll error during installation. I think i recall it as MSWORD97.dll. After I tried to exit setup, I lost cdrom support. I couldn't continue to install word so I reformatted the hardrive and began to reinstall windows, don't ask me why. When I tried to access the cdrom from dos after booting from disk, i got the "cdr101 not ready reading drive e: , abort, retry, fail" error.

Do you have another CDROM handy or can you get one? I suggest trying another. Yours may have bit the bullet. Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

I've found several times in the past that install from the hard drive fails with wierd results when it will install from the cd. Have never bothered to find the answers, just turned around and installed from the cd.
Sounds like your drive may have gone away, but you might be able to use a cleaner on it and get it to work. You might also check the location of a cdrom in the drive when you close the door and then open the door to see if it has spun.
YOu might also power down so the drive gets a power on reset on the next attempt. Ed Fair
