Is it possible to access the CDE environment thru Through Humming bird's exceed or any other X win applications.
If so can you please describe how to do the same..

Mr Kavidasan

Solaris CDE can be accesed thru two ways

1. Thru direct login from softwares of Hamminbird or Xvision from SCO , u need to install this on your Windows PC

2. Start XVISION/ Hummingbird on your system and then you do telnet to SUN Box and then set the environment variable DISPLAY to your ip no then do a /usr/openwin/bin/xterm
Then you will get an Xterminal

For both of the above to work you need to

1. add your ip on the Sun Box and become a valid user and 2. run xhost+ as root on the server to allow x hosts to get connected

Krishna

Mr.Krishna,

Thanks for your response. Presently i am accesing my SUN server from my windows PC with Humming Birds Exceed and running (/usr/openwin/bin/xterm).I had modified my .profile so that it set's the DISPLAY variable to my IP address everything works fine. What i would like to do is to get the CDE Desktop screen (As it appears on the SUN Monitor)in my xterm window. Please let me know whether it is possible and also Is it possible for me to access the CDE DT from xterm as a normal user.

Kavi
It's definitely possible. It's been a while since I used Exceed, though, so please bear with me if I am not 100% accurate.

First, go into the Exceed settings program and set it to run in a single window instead of in multiple windows.

Next, if my memory serves correctly, there is a "X server (XDMCP)" program in the Exceed program group. Run this program. You will be asked for the name or IP address of the server that is running the X login manager. Enter the name or IP address of your Sun server. Next click the "OK" or "Login" button. (Sorry, I can't remember which one is displayed on this screen!)

Sit back and wait a few seconds (up to a couple of minutes depending on PC and network capacities). You should then see the CDE login screen and you can proceed from there.

Hope this helps, even if only a little.

--
