Hi. My cd writer wont access the cd rom using nero. The cd rom shows up in the list as a supported cd rom but when I try to copy the cd it just locks up.If insteaf of doing a cd copy and I try to burn an audio disk---when I try to access the cd rom the same thing happens.Anyone have any ideas.PS It was not a problen with my old writer---the cd rom behaved normally---and yes I installed the version of nero that came with the new writer after uninstalling the previous version. Can anyone help?

Did you try a slower burning speed?
If no luck, what happens if you save the CD contents to the hard drive and burn from there?

Hi Bilko

Is this a new CDR? Because I am thinking that the registry may still have your old one in there.

Hi Ski & crustyoldbloke---just to clarify the situation.Cd burner is master on ide2.Hdd and cd rom master and slave on ide1.Open nero and the cd rom is recognised as the source for cd copy---but when I try to burn the PC locks up.If i try audio cd [instead of copy cd] when I scroll down to the cd rom to access the contents--same thing happens. If nero is not running and I open the cd rom and double click on an audio file then windows media player will play it.I will check tomorrow if the old cd writer is still in the registry---but would that make a difference---there is no uninstall for it.Thanx for your help

Does the CD-RW have built in 'buffer underrun' protection?
If not, then try a slower burn speed in Nero.
Also, is the media rated for the selected burn speed?

ski.the writer is burnproof and I can burn from the Hdd. It`s not a question of media compatability---I just can`t access my cd rom though it knows it is there.

Uninstall Nero in Add/Remove Programs, and reinstall it.
If no luck, start in Safe mode, open Device Manager, remove all CD-RW devices listed there, restart, Windows should recognize the new one and reinstall its drivers.
If still no luck, do the same for CD-ROM devices.
Finally, change the IDE connections and/or Master/Slave configurations for the CD-RW and CD-ROM units.

Hi ski.Thanx for your help. Finally got it sorted.I changed the cd rom for a spare one I had and Nero communicated with it straight away. The spare was a Sony---the other was an Afreey. Must have been incompatable.
