I'm having a problem with my writer, where I downloaded some music tracks on the internet, but when I burn it onto a cd, it skips alot. I burned two different CDs and they both gave me the same problems. It is a Pioneer DVD-RW, which recently came with the custom built PC I brought. I'm not sure if I may need to re-install Windows XP or to replace the Drive. I burn a few dvd movies from it and they don't seem to have any problems with them. Any suggestions?

thank you.

Before you do anything drastic, like replacing or cleaning the drive, try burning the CD's at a lower speed (16x for example). If that doesn't help, try a different brand of CD-R's.

When you say skip, does it skip in every player you've tried? Definitely try at least three different CD players before you assume it's the disc. Also, does it skip around the same place in the disc?

The Major Factor was left out...

WHAT burning software are you using?

Ive had the same thing happen and then reburned it and it worked fine. When burning it do it at a lower speed like cdogg said and also dont use the computer while burning. Let the processor focus on the burning.

the software that I'm using is Nero 6, and yes I did try burning at a lower speed but had the same problem.
I used two different CD-Rs and they both skips alot, and all the skips happen at the same places throughout the disk. and also tried listening on different players didn't seem to make a difference.

OK, you've got a serious problem then. Likely, it's a hardware issue.

You can try updating the firmware in the burner (out on the manufacturer's website) and making sure that Nero is fully up-to-date and patched (post your version if you're not sure).

Other than that, it doesn't make sense that some areas of each CD-R are corrupted. That wouldn't be a software issue, especially since your burner has burnproof technology. May want to contact Pioneer if it's not that old.

Maybe a memory problem in your PC? How much to you have?

Cdogg, not necessarily a hardware issue... Nero 6? which version of NERO 6, as some have had problems with exactly that what you describe...

I suggest you update to the latest (6.6.0.18) and then see...

Code:
There is only one fix and it has nothing to do with drive firmware, motherboard drivers, media type etc.

The problem is a single file, 'mp3PRO.dll' which you'll find in:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\AudioPlugins\

The version that comes with Nero 7 is 2.0.5.0 and for whatever reason, its faulty. If you have Nero 6 still, on the CD goto the following directory:

G:\Nero 6 Ultra Edition\Common Files\AudioPlugins\

(Where G:\ is your CD drive) and inside you'll find 'mp3PRO.dll' version 2.0.0.6. Copy this to:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\AudioPlugins\

And overwrite (backup first just in case you need to revert back for whatever reason) the one already in there.

You can DL the file (mp3PRO.dll) from ...

got no choice people, have to take the drive back to replace today, otherwise may need to wait another week. which I am a bit too busy to be able to do.
hopefully a replacement may sort it out. will keep you informed.

TamerHan,

Although I've never heard of the problem, BigBadBen has a good point. Apparently there are many out there that are having the same problem you do, and it's Nero's MP3PRO.DLL file.

Here's the original thread that discusses the topic:

So I suppose you should try replacing the file, and/or try a different CD burning program before replacing the drive.
