Thanks for reading my question! I recently purchased a Yamaha CRW2100EZ CD Writer to replace an older HP 8250i CD Writer which has been working fine for over a year. When I configured it per instructions as 'Slave' and installed it on the Secondary IDE controller along with an existing Lite-On CDRom configured as 'Master' Windows 98 SE does not detect either the new Yamaha or the Lite-On. The infamous yellow diamond with exclamation point shows up in Device Manager for the Secondary IDE Controller with Code 10 error. The HP 8250i was configured as 'Slave' also and still works fine when I re-install it. I've tried all possible combinations of Master/Slave, installing the Yamaha by itself, different IDE cable, searched for a newer driver using Windows update and it said I was using the latest one. I have what I believe to be a Phoenix Motherboard M5ALA with Award Bios v4.51PG dated 8/21/1998, an AMD K6-2 350MHz CPU, Windows 98 SE, a Maxtor 6.4 Gig HD on primary IDE controller and an SIIG SCSI Pro PCI card with an external SCSI ZIP drive. The Device Manager shows under Hard Disk Controllers an 'ALI M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE controller' Driver in addition to the Primary and Secondary dual FIFO IDE contollers. There are no conflicts reported in the Resources tabs. I've tried setting the BIOS settings to AUTO detect the drives with the same results. What is so confusing is that the HP 8250i still works perfectly when I re-install it. My computer manufacturer (CTX) is no help. They say the CD Writer should be recognized at least as a CDRom with no special driver requirements. To top all this off, this is the second brand I've tried with the same results. I first purchased a TDK and it did the same thing. I swapped it for the Yamaha thinking that there must be some incompatibility with my PC and TDK. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this problem will be greatly appreciated!

are you sure that your CDROM is set as master... apart from that i have no ideas...

I quadruple-checked the Master/Slave settings and they are correct. Remember though, the secondary IDE controller is disabled even when I install the new CD Writer by itself on the secondary IDE! It is, of course, set to Master when I do that.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Solution found!! I found, almost by accident, an upload on the 'Drivers.com' site for an updated IDE driver for my chipset. I tried it out of desperation and it worked! This driver is not to be found on the vendor website so if not for the individual who uploaded this driver I would probably never have solved the problem.

Kelly,
My problem is almost exactly like yours. ALI M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE controller Driver in addition to the Primary and Secondary dual FIFO IDE contollers. AMD K6-2. The infamous exclamation point with error code 10. I'm installing a Yamaha CRW2200EZ.

I went to Drivers.com and found a driver that may be the one you describe. The download file is named idew2k141.exe. It's identified as ALi mini-IDE Driver Version 1.41 However the readme.txt file says it's for Windows 2000. I'm running Win98 first release. I'm not used to installing drivers, so this makes me rather nervous.

Is this the same file that you downloaded and used successfully?

Thanks very much.

Thanks for the website. I've been looking for a good driver download site ever since windrivers.com started charging for access...:-Þ hg

I answered my own question. I went back to Drivers.com and used the more detailed search and found M5229.zip. Unzipped it, ran its setup.exe and it worked perfectly. I'm a very happy camper.
