Hello all,

I initially posted this message in the PC Hardware - Peripherals forum, but then it would make more sense to poset it here.

When I put blank disks into my CD-RW, it displays an error message: "J:\ is not accesible. Incorrect function." Also, the recording tab dissappeared from the properties menu for that drive. The NERO information tool I have reports that "System ASPI" is not installed (Although "NERO ASPI" is installed, and I can use NERO to burn CDs - it's just that it takes longer with that complex interface their program has.)

I tried to install the free ADAPTEC ASPI that everyone keeps recommending but the recording tab did not reappear. Also, now the NERO information tool says that "System ASPI" is corrupt. I made sure to follow installation directions exactly. Also, I tried modifying registry entries associated with ASPI or cd burning but still nothing (from Microsoft online support).

This only appeared recently - a few months ago or so. Not sure why.

Thanks for any support. This thing pisses me off - it's not supposed to be like that...

try to reinstall Nero and please also check to see if you are using cd-rw cd's. I made the mistake of using dvd-wr cd's with my cd-wr and got the exact same message. Although NERO can read dvd's your cd-wr is not able to.

hope this helps.

good luck

Do you have both a CD and DVD drive? If so make sure before you use either drive to write data that the Recording Tab on the selected drive has "Enable CD recording on this drive" checked. To access the Recording Tab, right-click the drive icon.

Ok I don't know why I wrote about ASPI because it's not natively supported by WinXP anyway.

W/e, I used X-teq X-setup to solve this - one of the pulgins allows you to enable built in cd-burning suuport (located at Hardware:CD-ROM/DVD).

The pulgin changes the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoCDBurning
and apparently disables it.

It is a local policy setting. It can be changed also in Group Policy Manager -
Local Computer Policy\User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer:Remove CD Burning Features

I got no clue how it was enabled in the first place - it's probably not a widespread setting... thanks for the help guys.

There is a small program from Nero to download called Nero BurnRights. This will give you control over drives and users access to CD/DVD burning.
