I have A diamond-data 36x CD-ROM that worked perfectly on two 486 machines.
I upgraded to a P-166Mhz, And then it would not read my CD-RW backup disc unless it was burned at single speed only.
I have now upgraded again to a 900Mhz Duron on an Epox M/Board and the CD-ROM refuses to read ANY data cd's, Except the M/Board install CD and a PC-Mag' CD.
I have tried all possible master/slave combinations and multiple BIOS/WIN98SE settings with no benefit. Now it wont even successfully read the previous discs. The PC hangs trying to read the track info and then usually returns 'Device Not Ready' Error and sometimes a BLUE SCREEN
lease insert CD 123456...(for example). Added to that, Audio CD's play with skips and stutters.
Using an MS-DOS 6.22 boot disk, I have tested the drive in the old Compaq 486, And it works perfectly. It Plays audio discs smoothly and reads all data disks with no problems. Under the same test on the new machine, Audio CD's stutter and skip and no data cd's can be accessed.
Does anyone know if there is an incompatability between older CD-ROMS and new PC's? I can't understand how the IDE interface affects the CD-ROMS audio output, And why the drive will start spinning up with some discs and not others.
My only solution at the moment is to run a 486 with the CD-ROM installed and network it to my PC, But this would be slow and seems to be unneccesary.
Anyone got any ideas? I'm at my wits end.
