Is it a new drive? Is the a cd in the drive that may have gotten jammed? There should be a small hole on the front of the drive - try inserting a straightened paper clip.
Sometimes this is caused by a hardware problem and sometimes by a program or Windows locking the drive. To find out which hit the button as soon as you turn your system on, before Windows starts to load. If it opens then you have a Windows problem, if not it is hardware. If the suggestions in the previous posts do not work try this and post back and we will take it from there. Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.
All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.
turn on the machine then......
push the button like crazy till the drive opens
if you have waited till windows started loading then its too late
try it again
do the lights come on on the drive?
Have you tried it outside Windows as I suggested? Direct CD only causes this problem when there is a packet writing formatted disc in the drive in my experience. If the drive is empty and it will not open from the button outside Windows it is nearly sure it is a hardware problem. Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.

Well it certainly opens but when I close the drive the computer or the drive itself usually freezes up. Im thinking its a hardware problem more then anything./
A friend of mine was having problems with his computer and an AOpen cd-rw...when he would insert ANY disk in the drive, generally the computer would either freeze or do a restart (WinXP wouldn't you know...).
He finally broke down and replaced the cd-rw and he no longer has any problems with it...
I facing the same problem about 1 month ago. The problem with my cd rom is connot open and if can open when i insert a cd, its hangs.
The problem is on the power supply. In my pc there is 2 HDD (big capasity), CD-ROMdrive, CD-RW drive and a few fans to keep my pc cold. After I change my power supply unit and with higher watts, the problem never come again.
