This is really odd. Its happening on my home PC and on a users laptop at work. Were both running XP Pro, my system is a AMD XP clone I built myself, his is a Gateway solo 9550.
Whats happening to him is his CD-ROM will spin up out of nowhere and lock his system up (hardlock) at random, regardless of what CD is in the drive. He has to hold the pwr button down in order to shut down. Any ideas ?

If I had to take a stab in the dark then I would give three guesses.
1) A virus
2) A weak power supply with poor voltage control
2) Faulty CDroms

I would image there is a bad CDrom drive as well, can you still get a warranty exchange ?

also try different IDE port on the desktop, as for gateway see if he can contact their support
