As above, User has PC with newly installed CD ROM Drive...

PC can boot up from CD ROM, can also read contents of CD if the CD is in the CD ROM while PC is booting up, however, PC won't read CD if put in after the PC has booted into Windows...

Any ideas appreciated...

Can windows see the drive? can you eject the drawer using Windows? What messages (if any) does windows display if you try to read a CD?

Thanks...

Yep, Windows can see the Drive (XP)... Can eject etc. However when you double click on the CD Rom when the CD has been put in AFTER the PC has gone into Windows it says 'Drive not accessible'. However, if you click on the CD Rom, when the CD has been inserted BEFORE Windows has started it can read the contents fine.

Sounds Strange I know, and I have never seen this problem before.

Have done the obvious, ie. reconnected drive, updated drivers etc.

Thanks

There is a circuit in the drive to tell the computer when the media has been changed. Apparently this isn't working. I've seen this on floppy drives. First I'd try the unit in another computer, it may be defective.

Took the very words out of my mouth! If it works in another PC, then try changing the IDE cable. (clutching straws here!) otherwise I guess its kaput.

Might look in the BIOS and see what the settings are to see if they make sense. Then maybe the driver is bad. Power supply may not have enought watts or maybe one of the lower voltage lines that sends the signals does not have enough amps to send the message signals.

Sometimes the lens gets dirty and can not see the optical disk.

Optical drive could just be bad.
