I have a laptop computer with a combo CD/DVD reader. Everytime I put a CD in the drive it is unable to be read and when I try to browse the contents, I get the message "DISK IS NOT FORMATTED." I have no problems whatsoever when using the same drive to read DVD's. Any ideas of why one would work but not the other?

Sorry about being vague with my description.

I am running Windows 2000 on a generic laptop that I have had about 2 years. I have never had any problems with this computer until just a few weeks ago when it just unexplainably started doing this. The DVD/CD ROM is a Toshiba SD-C2502. This, like most Toshiba drives, is supported natively by Windows 2000 and the device manager shows that it is working properly. I have tried uninstalling the drive and reinstalling it but no success. If I repeatedly open and close the disk tray with a disk in the machine it will sometimes detect the drive and allow access to it's contents. This only works sometimes and even then, I have to open and close the tray many times before it eventually recognizes the disk. I have not installed any new programs or made modifications to any settings that would cause any of the stated problems. Any ideas?

Have you gone to Toshiba's website and downloaded the latest firmware?

It sounds to me like the laser/lens might be dirty, or the drive might just be dying, unfortunately. But install latest drivers first, and it might not hurt to buy a cleaner disc for the drive and run it, although I have never seen them do too much good.

Also, if you are daring, you could open the machine and make sure all connectors are secure.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
