First off - thanks for reading my question.
Now to the details: I cannot get the CD-Rom
in a 3 year old Gateway to read any cd's.
The drawer opens and takes a CD but the light
doesn't come on and nothing shows up in
Windows Explorer. Under Device Manager the
drive doesn't appear to have any problems.
I've blown air into the drive and checked all
the connections in the back of the drive to make sure it
wasn't a physical problem. The only possible
cause is an error marking (yellow question mark)
next to the COM1 port in Device Manager. The
description is that "the device using this port
has been disabled".
Any idea how to undisable that device or any
other causes to this problem?

thanks alot

See if they have one. Probably shouldn't take one but who knows at this point. If it is pretty much comparable with default standards it should ID as standard and pull stuff from with win.

I have found Compaq to be pretty good at having documentation for their product, even if you really have to go on what seems like an archaeology dig to get it.

I would check for what they call maintainance manuals or tech manuals, they should have all the jumper settings in there - be aware many models are covered by the same book, so if you dont find one for your specific PC try a more general seach.

start here for manuals & drivers:

heres a Compaq link for modem set-up

ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/supportinformation/techpubs/qrg/app_d_modem_config_info.pdf

this is a direct link to open a PDF document showing various mnodems.

regarding my last two post, why i was talking Compaq i dont know....... must be my recent problems with them here..sorry Gateway,Gateway,Gateway

i think your modem is a US Robotics ? (tele-path was a model ) so drivers should be easy to get from any US Robotics site, as should jumper guides.

for gateway try here:

well guys....i don't really know how i did it but i got rid of the .vxd file errors. i think it came from just returning the serial port settings in BIOS to what they were before all this started. i did get the old yellow exclamation point error in device mangler like i did when we started this......but i can live with that.
so i made sure the modem worked ok and went ahead and put in a new screaming 52x CD-ROM that works just fine. i guess the old one just didn't want to spin.

Thanks so much for all your help. even though we couldn't fix all the problems, this was defintely a learning experience. and Thanks to the Tek-Tips folks for setting up and maintaining this great resource. hopefully i can lend some help to someone in the future.
