I have a compaq desk pro en 866, with NT workstation 4.0
It has a compaq cd rom, but NT will not see it, yet the machine will see it and load the drive off a dos boot disk.
I have tried the bios, jumpers, I've loaded the 16 bit drivers from the dos boot disk into Autoexec, and config.sys
What do you think it could be.

Did this occur "all of the sudden" or are you installing?

In either case, have you tried swapping out the CD-ROM with a different "known good" model? A+, N+, MCP

Have you tried running the disk manager to see if it detects the drive?

Are you running the CD as a master on IDE2 or slave on IDE1?

Is the CD rom IDE or Scsi? Compaq generally have IDE Cd players. Which ever way, have you tried installing the driver with the IDE master option via the control panel SCSI adaptors? There should be a minumum of two, HDD & CD.

Enable the PNP option? I dont think this is an issue, but compaq sometimes screw with operating systems, so anything is possible.

I also suggest testing another drive as per choctaw suggestion.

Last ditch, F10 on startup and run the compaq diags. See if it is detected there, option should be set to Auto (i think, gave compaqs away as a bad joke about 2 years ago)

I fixed it, it was the IDE driver was not installed, I don't know how it got uninstalled but it was there before, well thank you anyway
