I have a Compaq computer that suddenly stopped playing music CDs. It will still read and load software programs and sound is ok in other computer applications. I would appreciate any suggestions about a solution to the problem.

Have you tried checking that your cd sound is not muted in you sound control panel ?

Neo81,

Appreciate the answer, yes, I checked to make sure it was not muted. Frankly, we are stumped since the software appears to be correct and we know the ROM works with software data.

Try opening the box and checking the wire (analog connection)that goes from the CD ROM to the sound card. This is a four pin small plug that is usually on the opposite end from the CD ROM power plug on the back of the CD ROM. If this comes off or loses it's connection, the CD ROM will still function with the exception of Music CD Audio.

try this:
go to control panel
dblclick sounds and audio devices
select the Hardware TAB
select the CDRom Device from the list
click Properties button
select the Properties TAB
see if "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device" is checked
if not check it and see if CD can now be played.

hope this works!

Following on from what edito said, it's worth just sticking some headphones into the CD's jack socket & see if you can hear anything.

When you insert an audio CD, does it spin the disk & look like it's playing (even if there's no sound)?

Have you got TweakUI (or some similar tool) on your PC? There's an option (under the Paranoia tag) to turn off auto-play of data & audio CDs seperately.

Appreciate the response to my problem. I have checked the hardware tab and it is okay.

When you play an audio CD, it does not spin. The suggestion about the headsets is very good, did not know that.

I think it might be a loose wire and I appreciate the description of what and where to look for the wire. I am going to open the box tomorrow and check the wires. Will let you know what happened.

The problem has been solved. I found an upgrade to our existing security software that had been downloaded by our district office that removed the CD-Rom from an dll that controlled audio to the drive. They didn't bother to tell anyone about the download.

I appreciate everyone's help and advice.
