Hi,

I tried putting the MS Office 2000 CD into the CD-Rom Drive. The CD did not automatically run. I then went to my computer and saw the MS office icon on the CD drom drive letter, so I assume the drive read the CD. I clicked on the icon but nothing happened. However, I am able to right click and explore the contents of the CD. Why isn't the CD running? I need to use the repair function for MS office which is on that CD. I have tried running this CD as administrator as well, which did not help either. Please help. Thanks.

Hi,

First before that I can help you a question.
Wath type of operating system do you use.

Regards from,
DDSend.

I'm running Windows NT

CDROM's can be set not to start automatically. It can be a pain sometimes to have one start automatically and go to install when you only want to explore the CD.

Usually there is still a setup.exe or install.exe that can be run.

Check to see if you can see the CDROM Icon and can view the contents of the CDROM. Usually you rightclick on the Icon for the CDROM and go to explore or view the CDROM in windows explorer. Also make sure the CDROM Icon is not a mapped network drive.

It is always possible that the CDROM does not have the right drivers. Try another CD with files on it to see if you can read it. Sometimes a CD that was copied can not be read by all CDROMS. Often we use a copy of the original CD to install network software or software on a group license. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Yes, I see the icon.
Yes, I can right click and explore.
The CD is an original licensed MS Office 2000 CD.
It's hard to find what .exe to run if there are many .exe files on the CD. I would assume that double clicking the CD-ROM icon should start the CD if the CD does not start automatically when inserted, but that does not work either. When I double click the CD-ROM drive icon, the machine plays the windows bootup sound. The same thing happens when the CD is first inserted. That is highly weird. Any other ideas?

Don, if you right-click on the CD ROM drive, do you get an option to AUTOPLAY? If so, then click it :-)

If not, is there a file in the root directory of the CD called AUTORUN.INF? This file is a sort of Autoexec.bat for CDs. If the file does not exist, the CD will not autorun :-(, however, if it does exist, double click on it. The file should open in Notepad (or your text editor of choice). Look through the file and find the line which begins:

open =

The command shown after the '=' is the object that is supposed to activate when the disk is autorun. You can locate this file manually and double-click on it to achieve the same result.
