Dell Dimension 2400 - I think the secondary controller is bad to I hooked up ther CD-ROM as a slave to the hard drive on the primary controller. I need to boot off the CD-ROM. In the BIOS it is listed in the "Boot Sequence" but says (not installed). If I boot to windows the CD-ROM drive behaves normally. How do I get the BIOS to recognize the CD-ROM so it will be botable?

There should be a setting in the BIOS called ADVANCED or similar, there you will need to get it to be recognized first...

Thanks, I selected it, and it gave the an option of "Unrecognized" and I chose that and it worked!

glad that it worked, but it indicates that there may be a problem with the drive... it should have seen it with it's identifier or at least as CD-ROM...

Will installing an external cd-rom/dvd drive cure internal issues with the Bios not recognizing a drive?

My problems started after changing to a new thermaltake case. The drive is a Plextor CD-RW. I'm wondering if its the order i Reinstalled the drive and the HDD. One minute the drive was fine and now if I disconnect the IDE cable and leave the 4-pin power connector in the tray will open and I have a solid amber light. All bios are set to auto. never had a problem before.

I will do that. In fact there was a screw mount that I was not able to use. I left it without a screw in. I will go back and check. Or have I already done too much damage? It seems that the motherboard will not hold the Bios and keeps resetting to default. Now its telling me I installed a new CPU. I never touched it during the move to the new case. I think its time for a Professional upgrade. Thanks for your help.
