This was happening to a friend on mine's PC. he had a dvd and a dvd/rw. Turns out it was the DVD/RW drive was bad. Sometimes when he booted both drives were there, next time, neither would be there...took the dvd/rw back for a different one...been ok since then.
are they visable in the bios during boot even when they don't show up in windows? If they are need seen during post, this points to a hardware problem. I would still try one at a time to see if I coulc get to act up with one of the drives and not the other. When you reloaded the system did the ide controller get loaded ok?
IF you only have one of the drives connected, does it do this? As for a registry issue if you are good you may find something, but running a program like system works is easier. and other then an aspi problem, can think of nothing in windows that would cause this problem. Is there any thing listed in event viewer,or error logs?
both myself and my neighbour are having the same proble. my neighbour has been through 4 cd-roms and came to the conclusion it is a software problem not a hardware prob. when checked our drivs work fine in other pc's. been asking around and seems to be fairly common problem with windows 98, not sure if this is coincidence or fault. any help is always appreciated
