Anybody know of any freeware which will allow me to rescue a CD-R which won't read in the CD drive?

found many tools but limited in featues i.e. save and file size limitations

I heard someone mention in here before about a program called ISOBuster that they had used to fix some cd problems

found it

Often (if it's because of scratches), take a white wax candle and rub it all over the surface of the CD, and then polish it with a soft cloth.
The wax fills in the scratches, and the CD can then be used, at least long enough to make a copy.
If it's not scratches, there are a few programs that can extract a CD, depending on it's format.
What sort of stuff is it?

Cheers,
Jim
