DVD/CD-ROM drives do not require any additional drivers for Win 9x, ME, 2000, or XP. They are supported natively by the OS.
The most common problem when a "good" CD-ROM drive doesn't work is a bad connection. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the drive several times to be sure you are getting a good connection.
No jumper settings are required. If your notebook is less than 4 years old the drive should be CSEL (cable select). If it is older it might need a drive set for M/S (master/slave still no jumpers). These are not common and it may be difficult to find one of these drives. In which case you may need to get an external drive with USB or PCMCIA interface. They will work with the CSEL drives.
Then again your problem may be that the drive is just no good. Good luck. I hope this helps.
