I just did a MB replacement and XP reinstall. All smooth except this problem. CD and DVDs with data are blank in explorer and othere third party apps. CD media is fine and checked on another PC. Music CDs play with no problem. Any ideas on this one? CDROM is a NEC_2200

Are the CD-R and DVD-R disks? What software wrote to them, was it XP or third party software? Was the session closed at the completion of writing or left open?

Is there any firmware update available for your drive?

Google for ISObuster and Multimounter, see if they can help?

yes CD and DVR are disks written using Nero. This is the same CD_ROM used to burnd them. I updated the NEC drivers. I am assuming the CDs are good because I put them in another computer and the files are there in explorer.

Bizzare thing is when I put a music CD , explorere still doesnt see any files, but the CD ripper program see and is able to rip the tracks.

Anything odd in the Bios? Perhaps a Bios update is available, or try setting it to Safe Defaults.

Same thing with things like drivers for your Motherboard and Chipset.

If I knew more about the hardware side of things I'd talk about Secondary Slaves and Primary Masters and Jumpers, and God knows what, but you'll have to get help down that track from someone who is more hardware savvy, or try the Hardware Forum.

1.) I am assuming that the cd/dvds are not finalized, or that they are multisession...

explorer accesses the cd/dvd over a layer (kinda like a driver) where as the ripper program accesses the data either raw or over the scsi layer (adaptec)... [as layman as I can get]

now how does one access these files? use a program such as ISOBuster, full version costs but the trial is good enough for 30 days (or 15, I am not sure anymore):
or

Code:
To close a DVD Using Nero Express.

Open Nero express make sure you have selected DVD from the drop-down list (Which recorder would you like to use).

Click on data/data disk this should open the disk content window, as you do not want to add to disk just click next.

Final burn settings, remove the tick from allow files to be added (multisession disk)

Click on burn, this will finalise the disk.
