Over the last 6 or so months my CD Drives occasionally do not autoplay when you enter a disk in the drive, but when you go to click on the My Computer side CD Drive icon the system freezes. I hit CTRL ALT DELETE to end My Computer, it ends it but this causes everything except the desktop background to disappear including the Window's task bar. I then end up hard booting it. After this I spend 10 minutes to a day restarting my PC to try to get it to go to Windows because it always freezes up when I try to go into either Windows reguarly or into Safemode. I have reloaded Windows a few times and this does make a difference for a little while. This problem also is not a constant problem, you just know that sooner or later it will happen again. Any clue on why this is happening?

Whens the last time you cleaned the drives? Second what virus/spyware scanners have you used? Also whens the last time you chkdsk and defragged? Might help to also empty all temp folders.

I have never cleaned the drives. I use AVG Free for Virus and Spyware Search and Destroy for spyware, which I use weekly, I Checked the Disk, Defragment and cleared all temp folders 2 weeks ago.

Well it may or may not help but you can pick up a cleaning disc from a store for about 10-15 dollars. Over time if there old or in a dusty environment dust can collect on the eyes of the cdroms and cause them not to pick up disc.

The chances of it affecting both drives makes "cleaning" the unlikely solution. As a matter of fact, I never recommend using cleaning discs, because I've seen so many drives ruined by them. Unlike an audio CD player, a ROM drive in a PC spins up at much higher speeds when it first reads the CD. The cleaning brushes on those discs were not designed for that.

Putting that aside for now, I'd recommend going out to Mi¢ro$oft's site and trying the AutoFix tool:

If that doesn't work, then double-check to make sure you've never installed a program called Alcohol 120%. If you have, then that's probably the culprit.

--- Either that, Cdogg, or the drive in question is having problems, meaning that it is on it's way out... or the IDE cable needs to be checked, evtl. replaced...
