cd drives wont read cd's

i have a silly question and i may not belong here, but i hope i do i am not a tech,but i do work on puters to a certain extent. but now i have a problem and i cant get anyone who knows how to fix it.. i burned 3 cds, data only, now my cd-rom nor my cd burner drive will read the cd's iwas told to turn off the audio insertion so i did it still wont read the cd's, but i can put them in my wife's puter and it will read the cd's
she has wins98 and i have wins 98se
any suggestions if i am allowed to ask here???

Perhaps your CDROM drives are no longer listed. Do this:

1) On your desktop, right-click My Computer and select Properties
2) Go to the Performance tab
3) Does it say anything about MS-DOS Compatibility Mode or that some drives are using it?
4) Jump over to your Device Manager tab and see if your CDROM drives are listed, and if anything is flagged


If a drive on your system is running in MS-DOS mode, then most likely you won't see your CDROM's in Device Manager. There are a couple reasons this might happen, and they require different fixes depending on which one is the cause. If your hard drive is flagged in Device Manager, remove the disk controller and reboot. If that doesn't help, try the suggestion at this site:

If MS-DOS mode isn't your problem, try removing the CDROM entries in Device Manager and reboot.

Still no luck? Does your BIOS recognize the drives?

i did all of that still dont work they are in the device manager, there is a test u can run on the cd-rw and it showed allto be fine so i have no idea lol

Hi rd645,

use a 98 boot disk to boot the system. Choose CDRom support when asked. put a known data cd in each drive and see if you can read it. Remember that the 98 boot floppy will install a utility ramdisk into memory, so your cdroms will likely be bumped back one drive letter from normal (e: becomes f: , etc)

Can you see the drives from the boot floppy?

Hi,
If you have had a spin up problem on one of your CD's Windows would have given a message about a problem with Digital Extraction. Theerefore ALL cd's would be read as AUDIO cd's.

Put a CD in and have a look at it in explorer. Is it showing it as an Audio CD?

If it is - Open windows Media player, Tools, Options, CD Audio, and enable digital playback.

the enable digital playback is enabled,,,,,,i downloaded directx i had an older version of it so i dl'd 8.1 i think it was and was able to read one cd then it would not read the other two,,,,,,this is weird,,,,,gonna try the disk thing and see what happens ty all for your help, much appreciated.

Just out of curiosity, are these 2 cd's the only ones giving you problems? Were they burned CD's or store-bought CD's?

Try at least 3 different data CD's and 3 different music CD's - preferably store-bought. Can any of those be read by either drive?

Also, what kind of CDROM does your wife's pc have? Is it a burner?

the cd's that either drive wont read are ones i burned on my sony burner,,she has a regular factory cd-rom, no burner..any other cd i have works fine,,only the ones i burned they wont read altho i downloaded an newer version of directx and it read one of the cd's and not the others....all i know to do is take and copy off the cd off my wifes' puter and put them on disk put them on my puter and reburn them to a new cd and turn off the audio insertion

I've run into issues where I've burned CD's at 8X and tried to read the data on them in a regular CD-ROM and they won't read because they were burned at too high a speed. As soon as I reburned at 2X or 4X, there wasn't a problem.

Are you burning multiple sessions on these CDs? I've also run into issues with CDs burned using DIRECTCD when my PC is running Nero.

If you've got the CDs available, you might try the lower speed burn and see if there's a difference.

2 things:

1. Have you made sure to finalize these cd's..
2. You may be using poor quality media (esp. if your partner's cd reader is quite old) and therefore older drives have trouble reding this media.

3. Try using gold bottomed media. Kodak GOLD are very good.

I want to think all of you for your suggestions and help with this problem i had.
What i did was got to thinking i did several sessions on one cd
i had the auto insertion on while making a data disk,,,this is wrong,
when buring a data cd you have to turn off the auto insertion.
i copied all of my cd's to disks
then reburned them on a cd without the audio insertion on
cd works fine now
