CD drive won't read CD-RW's

When I put a CD-RW in my CD-ROM drive, it doesn't do anything. It doesn't autorun...it doesn't let me open it through My Computer...it doesn't let me explore the CD at all...as a matter of fact, once the CD is put in, it doesn't even try to spin to read the CD. Any ideas?

Some older CD drives cannot read CD-RW media. You need a newer "multi-mode" CD-ROM drive.

The CD drive isn't old...it is a GoldStar-CRD 8161B(CPQ). The PC it is in is a Compaq Deskpro END P650 running Windows 98.

Maybe is compatibility issue. Some CD-ROMS only can read certain CD-RW brands. Check that GoldStar web-site, (if they have one) and look for CD-RW compatibility. For example: if you go to Sony web-site and look for CD-RW recomendations to use on there CD-ROMS, you'll see the brands that work best on there CD-ROMS.

Did you try that CD-RW on another PC with diferent CD-ROM brand?

I had these problem a few months ago and my client had to buy a specific cd-rw to use on his cd-rom.

If you are using Adaptec (Roxio) Easy Cd Creator and Direct CD they have a UDF reader you can install so that your CD-ROM can read Roxio's UDF format. You didn't say how fast your CD-RW is. If it is under 8X, then you probably need a UDF reader from Roxio's web site. Do you have all the updates applied to your burning software?

The CD drive is 16X & I did already install the UDF reader hoping that would fix it, but it didn't.

Has it ever worked? Did you install the CD-RW internally. Have you checked the cable on the CD-ROM drive to see if it may have been knocked loose when the CD-RW was installed?

"Not old" generally means 3 years or less. Unfortunately, your drive probably doesn't have the ability to read CDRW's. In a couple systems that I maintain there are 2 CDROM drives (16X and 24X ). The 16X cannot read CDRW's but the 24X can. I'm not sure where the cut-off is exactly, but it all depends on the quality of the laser each one has.

Are you testing a data CDRW or music CDRW? Regardless, you must make sure you aren't leaving any sessions open. That way the table of contents is written. If that doesn't work and you must have compatibility, CDROM drives are cheap nowadays. Consider upgrading...

I have had this same problem on my own PC. And it is a 32X CD-ROM drive and will not read some specific brands . However if I put the same CD into the CD-RW external drive it reads no problem. Does your CD-RW drive read the disk??..
I have to agree with CDOGG......your drive may be to old to read the CD. It also depends on the speed at which the CD was burnt. if it was burnt at 8X or higher your Cd-ROm drive may have troubles reading it.
