Hi
My machine has recently presented me with a severe problem:
My CD drive can read and play audio CDs, but not data CDs or DVDs (from what I understand, the reverse problem is much more common). When I insert a data CD or a DVD, the LED lights up, the drive begins to whirl normally, but then it just stops. In windows explorer, clicking on drive E (my CD drive) just gives me a box that prompts me to insert a disc. I have no problem at all in playing audio CDs.
I'm running windows 2000 pro (single boot) on a P4-M (mobile) laptop; the drive in qustion is a TOSHIBA combination DVD-ROM/CD-RW, model number SD-R2212. I have had the machine for about a year.
In addition -- curiously enough -- my floppy drive has stopped recognizing all floppy disks; it asks me if I want to format any floppy that I insert.
However, when I tried reinstalling windows 2000 under the repair a damaged installation mode, the floppy drive read the installation diskettes with no problem, and the CD drive read the installation CD fine. Unfortunately, the reinstallation didn't fix my problems.
Any help would be extremely, extremely appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
