Hi all,

I have a laptop that has been bought to me by a friend seeking help (same old story!)...

When I put a regular audio cd into the drive it can be played as normal through winamp, but there is no way to explore the contents of the CD. The options are all there when the drive is right clicked, and I have set the drive not to autoplay, and ask for options. When the CD is inserted the option to open a folder to view files is there as normal, but when selected nothing happens. It's very odd.

I have noticed that he has Deomon Tools installed. I have stopped this prog from running at startup, and disabled the virtual drives, could this be the problem? Or has something gone haywire in the registry?

Thanks.

Rob.

Whilst trying to find the answer I have uninstalled Daemon Tools but the problem persists.

Can you explore the CD from Safe Mode, or from Normal Mode but as a different user?

Is there any Properties/Preferences from WinAmp that is interfering?

Try this quick fix first before you attempt a repair:

Have you tried removing/uninstalling the CD drive from Device Manager, rebooting and letting Windows rediscover the drive and drivers?

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Thanks for that advice, I'll try those out tomorrow morning and post the results.

Thanks again.

Well, I'm sad to say that this has defeated me, and it's time to install xp over itself.... I hate being beaten!

When I try to Explore the CD drive it just jumps back to highlighting the last area that was explored.... Very odd.

Thanks for your help though.

Rob.
