I'm sure this question has been asked before; unfortunately, I don't know how to find it- thanks for your help in advance.

I was copying a CD and once I put in the blank, the program errored out and quit on me. Meanwhile, the disc is still stuck (spinning?) in the drive.

I can restart the computer to remove the disc, but I'm wondering if there's an easier way to do this. I'm using Windows2000 and the CD burn software is the (hellish) "CD Creator 4.0.1" in case that helps.

Have you tried pushing the eject button? This works for me most of the time.

Of course. It's still spinning in there even though the software quit on me.

Somewhere on the face of the drive will be a small ho;e. This is to insert a paperclip (or equivilant) to open the drawer. It is there for just this reason.

What could be easier than rebooting?

I did use the paperclip and opened the cd rom (allowing me to remove the disc) but still had to restart my computer to close it and make it usable again.

When I say 'easier', I mean easier on the hard drive. In other words, is there a way to avoid restarting the computer to remove a disc when it's stuck spinning as a result of a software error.

Thanks.

You can "log out", and then "log in" to save some wear 'n tear on the drive.

Do not open the spinning drive with a paperclip. One of our students got badly injured by doing this. The Cd spins at a very high speed and actually flew out as the drive door was opened. The cd hit his right eye and cut into it. The studend needed emergency surgery and lost part vision on his eye. So "DO NOT OPEN THE SPINNING DRIVE".
Regards

Jurgen

The spinning should stop before the drawer opens. I once had a normal drive shoot a disk at me, it was the pnly time it happened. I now keep my tower under the desk!

Agreed. There are plenty of horror stories out there with discs exploding into shrapnel, even when the drive wasn't forced open.

Save yourself before you worry about wear over one extra shutdown!

Thanks for the visual! I got a mental picture of a classroom full of students ducking and covering their heads as the mad spinning CD goes orbiting aroung the room...could happen!

I didn't read all the way through the post...sorry to inject humor into an otherwise tragic situation, my apologies.
