When I insert any CD into the CD-ROM drive (such as DVD playback software), the atorun procedure appears to start, but instead of starting the program which is on the CD, Windows XP start a completely different program (specifically the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy driver installation program).

Why? How can I fix this without re-installing Windows?

No autorun files exist in the root directory of any of the hard drives or other CD drives.

The Microsoft AutoRun repair utility did not detect any problems, but the issue still remains.

Any other thoughts?

- James.

*** PROBLEM SOLVED ***

It turns out that it was not an autorun problem at all, but a default program file association problem related to the DemoShield installer.

More specifically, the registry entry HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ApplicationPaths\Demo32.exe had an entry for 'default' which, when deleted, resolved the problem.

Makes some sense, but I thought the problem was for any CD or DVD. It is hard to believe an Audio CD would run the DemoShield Installer, but I believe you.

A star for you.

Once I was trying to install something, and no matter what I did, it would try to install the scanner! Finally traced it down to an undeleted file in the temp file.

Well Bill, it was for "any" cd that I tried, which was about 4 different software CDs, all of which apparently use the SemoShield installation program. My testing was not initially thorough enough to include an audio CD.

BTW, Thanks your the link to the Microsoft AutoRun diagnostic program. It did not show up in any of my searches using the Microsoft Knowledge Base search (which seems to be less and less effective each time I use it).
