I am creating a vlan on a sup III engine, it is a layer 3 vlan with and IP of 10.97.1.10. I would like to connect a 3548xl switch to the vlan via a trunk link on port 4/48 on the 4006 and the fa 0/24 port on the 3548. the ip of the 3548 is 10.97.1.10 and all the workstations on that switch are static. How do I set this up without having to change the workstation IP's. I spoke to Cisco and they stated that the VLAN1 IP can not be different than the VLAN1 on the 4006 (10.1.1.108)10.1.1.xxx subnet. Any Ideas?

Why not set up another vlan with the ip subnet range of your workstations.

Gaveeve, What do you mean by setting up another vlan in the workstation ip range?

For the ports you have your workstations in, set them up to be in vlan 2. Set the ip for vlan 2 in the same subnet as the workstations. Then set up the routing for vlan 2. Since you already have a trunk between the 2 switches you should be all set.

Dear Respected friends/experts;
Here is the whole problem analyzed..

vtp server :4006(96 ports)(2 ports for vlan2)
vtp client 2950 g(24 ports)(5 ports configured under vlan2.)
trunking port :gigabit

Problem :
we can communicate system of vlan2 (2950 G) on vlan2 on 4006 switch.system on vlan 1can communicatye to system on vlan 2 by assigning the gateway as ip address of vlan 1,but vlan2 is unable to communicate to vlan1 even if the gateway is assingned the ip address of vlan 2.

REmarks : Even in 4006 itself the system in vlan2 is not able to communicate to vlan 1.and backdone is LX.(from 4006 to 2950 G).

4006 switch.system (vlan2)can communincate (vlan2) (2950 G)
4006 switch.system(vlan 1)can communincate (vlan2) (2950 G)
(vlan2) (2950 G)cannot communicate 4006 switch.system(vlan 1)
(vlan2)4006 switch.system cannot communicate 4006 switch.system(vlan 1)

172.16.1.1 is ipaddress of vlan 1.
192.0.0.1 is the ipaddress of vlan2.
172.16.1.100 ip address of system in vlan 1 communication with a system in vlan2 (with ip address) {including the default gateways of each system}.
172.16.1.1 default gateways of each vlan 1.
192.0.0.10 default gateways of each vlan 2.
192.0.0.100 ip address of system in vlan2 not communicating with vlan1.

EAgerly awaiting ur reply;
Priya Shah.
