Did you type anything after VLAN? If not, you can/should start in one of two ways: Type a question mark ? to get a list of options or enter vlan #, where # is the vlan numeric ID. You can create multiple vlans but each must have a numeric assignment within the range for that switch. You also have the option of adding a name which might simplify tracking of new vlans-similar to the "description command" used on a router interface.

Problem sorted, I have to enter the command switch#vlan database<cr> followed by switch(vlan)# vlan 2 (to add a second VLAN), maybe I've got a cheap Korean version of the IOS (or is it a change in the latest 12.0, I'm new to all this), thanks anyway.

Problem not sorted, I've created my second VLAN but can't find a way to assign ports to it, any ideas (no options available in config-if mode)

Remember to use ? either at the prompt or after typing a command (hit the spacebar once after the command before typing the ?) You will see a list of options if your syntax was correct. Have you assigned an IP address to this switch? If so you should be able to access it through your browser. How are you currently connected-through the console port possibly?

Connected through console and telnet, IP address assigned, can be accessed through browser but still haven't stumbled on the answer

Have you tired, for example:

interface fastethernet 0/1
switcport access vlan 20

Thanks very much for that, quite obvious when you think about it.

pplewis is right...select the interface to assign each vlan to a particular port. The command I'm familiar with is vlan-membership [static or dynamic] vlan#. From privilevged mode use show vlan (or show vlan# for a specific vlan) to see which switch ports have been associated with the vlan.
